Robert Spies
“Another Dip in the River” A collection of recent paintings, prints, and sculptures by Robert Spies make up the Featured Artist show this April 8th till May 1st at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino. Dr. Spies had a long career in marine research and consulting throughout the Pacific Rim. It was making zoological illustrations in graduate school that awakened his interest in art and the possibilities of communicating with images rather than words. Spies began making sculptures in wood starting in the 70’s. After moving to Mendocino in 2002 he began to explore other sculptural materials as well as printmaking, collage, and painting. His work reflects nterest in Paleolithic and tribal artists as well as 20th century art movements. There is a loose and expressive quality to his prints capturing the energy of the moment. Once the press has rolled over the inked plate, the image is frozen in time, permanently joined to paper. Spies title for this exhibit refers to the quote: “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.” This collection shows that Spies is ready to dip in the river over and over.
