Karen Bowers
Painter: water media
Artist's Statement
For me, painting is a practice, a meditation in color, a way to explore places and ideas, problems and solutions. Each new blank piece is a chance for openness and optimism. This is why I paint and what I hope to convey. Karen Bowers |
Fog Works
New Art by Karen Bowers, Featured Artist May 4 through June 6, 2022 “Fog Works” by Karen Bowers is the Featured Art for May at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino. Karen’s water media paintings are rendered interpretive and suggestive by her painting process. She begins her work on paper with water. “Water is my foundation.”
“Navarro Beach," above, her show’s central piece, represents the beginning of Karen’s use of fog as a key ingredient: “Clarity was gone. I let it go. On a foggy day, my work became open to possibilities unseen. In my studio, I soak paper and use gouache to recreate this atmosphere: Soft sky water landing on my paper, no chance of paint drying. Pigment floating over wet paper. Water and color. No direction known. These days, clarity seems harsh. Fog Work is what I have turned to.” |
