THE BAKING SINGER
For more than 15 years, I owned and operated the nationally acclaimed Grainful Bread Bakery in San Rafael, CA. During this time, I was also the singer in a blues/funk band called Crosscurrents. We played mostly original tunes and opened for such greats as John Lee Hooker, Joe Satriani, Peter Rowan and Queen Ida & the Zydeco Band. HOME ON THE COAST In 1992, I gave birth to my son, Vincent and in 1995, I moved to the Mendocino Coast with my final destination being the beautiful town of Elk. It is in Elk that I raised my son, met my husband Steve and where get my daily photographic inspirations. I call what I do, “Visual, Edible and Audible Art”. It’s all a creative mix of art with different mediums. I design cakes, am a jazz/blues vocalist, a photographer and graphic designer! GRAPHIC DESIGN AND UNIQUE FORAL PORTRAITS When I first moved to the Coast, I worked as a line cook & pastry chef where I sustained a serious injury. My hus- band urged me to go back to school to study graphic design, telling me that I had the “eye” for it. At the time, there was a wonderful Graphic Design program at the former College of the Redwoods. It was during my studies at the college that I took a class in Photoshop from world renowned calligrapher/graphic designer, Judy Detrick. It was during my final project for this class that I discovered my unique “process” for imaging flowers. Encouraged by my husband, I began capturing the intimate details & personalities of wild and seasonal flowers using a non-traditional photographic technique. I created still life works of art on an open bed scanner. These pieces became my fine art. That expeience opened my eyes to the study of flowers and traditional photography. RECENT WORK: More recently I’ve studied photography both online and at workshops all over the world. My photographic interests have greatly expanded to include portraits, landscapes, macro flower portraits, wildlife studies, musicians, camera movement and multiple exposure. I photograph with a Canon 5D Mark IV digital camera and with a variety of traditional and art lenses. My desire is to use light to portray the drama and beauty of the ephemeral moment both in nature and people. My work has been shown at galleries in California, Texas. and Japan. My work can currently be seen at the Artists Cooperative in Mendocino, where I am a member, and online at www.sharongarnerphotography.com, on Facebook (Sharon Garner & Sharon Garner photography) as well as Instagram (sharonart_95432). EXHIBITIONS: In Northern California my art has been shown at the Mendocino Art Center, the Headlands Coffeehouse, the former College of the Redwoods, Scharffenberger’s Wine Cellars, Stanford Inn, Savings Bank of Mendocino (in Fort Bragg and Mendocino), the Gualala Art Center, the Marin Center for the Arts, Edgewater Gallery, Elk Artists Collective, Moody’s Coffeehouse, Odd Fellows Hall, the former Pangea, and the Boonville Fair. My work has been shown abroad at galleries in Omachi and Matsumoto, Japan, Karlshrue, Germany and in the USA at the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and in Austin, Texas. My images have been published in the former College of the Redwoods class schedule, The Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute’s brochure, and “Downbeat Magazine”, February 2017.
