Art making is a way of life for Laura Corben. It is a response to seeing. To being alive. To having a blank piece of paper on hand.
I Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. -Mary Oliver I see Art as a response to life, a way to pay attention and to “tell about it.” After a year of art school Laura was off to explore the world and began a life of sketchbook journaling and travels, first across the U.S. then a year long trek to India and back. Eventually she earned a BFA at San Jose State University, then taught art near the Bay Area. A sabbatical was an opportunity for another journey around the world, making a dozen sketchbooks along the way. Now settled in Mendocino County, her art reflects her rural surroundings and love of nature. Dozens of sketchbooks attest to other travels, landscapes and nature studies. Laura teaches travel and nature journal workshops in the summer at Emandal. Artworks are primarily in water media: watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and more recently a series of monoprints.
