The Science and Art Experience
Art is a way to explore, clarify, and share. I like to communicate relationships, interactions, and story, perhaps seasoned with a bit of humor, but leaving room for individual viewer interpretation and discovery. I am particularly interested in concepts and techniques that integrate art and science: that combine visual aesthetics with knowledge gained by investigating the natural world, and that recognize experimentation and problem solving as part of the art-making process. Investigating the properties of art materials is, in itself, fascinating, and connects to principles of science in practical ways. The process and product of my own art making is influenced by a background in life sciences and a career in science education with an emphasis in teaching and learning, curriculum development, and the integration of new technology. My artwork includes serigraphs, paintings in acrylics and watercolor, drawings in pencil and ink, kinetic constructions, and digital painting. Mostly I make art for the joy of it and am delighted when the imagery has conceptual surprises. |
