Blooms, Birds, and Bodies, new work by printmaker and metal worker Mary Anderson, is now showing at the Artists’ Co-Op of Mendocino through the month of May. Although trained as a sculptor, glass and metal artist, Mary has currently focused on engraving on copper plates. The source of her inspiration is right outside her studio door. The blooms from her garden and its curious visitors are caught on her phone camera and drawn on etching plates. One day a turkey vulture landed on a sculpture there, spread his magnificent wings, and thus began her interest in their faces and their ability to clean up the environment. She now calls them “birds of pray” for their part in our ecology.
Most of her prints are one of a kind because she chooses to hand color and rework them after printing, making each one unique. Delightful handmade copper bowls are another specialty, enameled in a rainbow of colors. Born in Fort Bragg and raised near Caspar, Mary made a flight of her own to New York where she studied at the Art Students League, then Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island, finishing with a MFA from the University of New York, Albany. She taught in San Francisco for many years at the California School of Mechanical Arts, lectured at colleges and abroad. Eventually she returned to Caspar where she built her studio and is now a member of the Artists’ Co-Op. Don’t miss this chance to see her exquisite work which will be up from May 5th to May 31st. Online and ongoing. This Online Exhibit is accessible here, even after the gallery show concludes. The art is for sale. Details are available on Mary's Artist's Webpage.
