How it began:
For many years I have enjoyed making art with close friends. The energy that passed back and forth helped me abandon self judgement and just plain enjoy moments of art making. Times changed and so did people’s lives, and these small groups slowly disappeared. Then I met Sev Ickes at the Artists' Co-op and immediately realized that we were simpatico in so many ways. I suggested we get together and make art once a week. Thus “Tuesdays With Sev” was instituted. Over a year ago Sev showed up at our work table visibly excited, and said. “I want to show you some magic.” She whipped out a piece of photograph paper and sprayed it with, what I was to learn, was distress oxide spray. "But you have to wait until it dries," she said. It didn’t look interesting to me, kind of dull, in fact. After a few minutes she wiped it down which revealed the most dazzling colors and immediately turned in my head to vibrant flowers. Soon after this revelation the idea of making hand-decorated paper excited us. We tried many methods of doing this with jelli plates, hand-made stamps and pattern makers of all sorts. In June of last year we decided to collaborate on a few pieces and just couldn’t stop. In this exhibition, we are both showing some of our early works before we started working jointly, as well as all the pieces we produced by our collaboration. We hope it makes you smile and feel a little light hearted after so much sadness in the last few months. Shanti Benoit July 2020 |
Artists Note: Surprise and Switch All the collages on 6x6x3/4 in. wood panels, like the four squares above, are examples of a Surprise and Switch. Shanti and Sev each independently started a tile (a surprise) and then exchanged the tiles (the switch). Without consultation, they completed the design, content, and composition, and then celebrated the delightful results (another surprise)! Want to own one? $150 each. Hang it or set on a shelf.
